The big picture: using wildflower strips for pest control
Net Zero and Resilient Farming
Jonah’s work focuses on how land use, soil management, and soil texture affect the amount of carbon in soils using modelling and statistical approaches. He is currently working on further developments for the Rothamsted Carbon turnover model (RothC) and its integration with soil and climate databases. Jonah’s PhD project (Cranfield University and Rothamsted Research) developed a soil organic carbon (SOC) to clay ratio index for assessing SOC status in agricultural (and woodland) soils across England and Wales. The project also involved development of infrared spectral calibrations for soils in England and Wales, assessing whether these could accurately predict SOC/clay values, and index classes, to aid the application of the index (by reducing the costs, time, and labour of analysis).
