Plant Sciences for the Bioeconomy
Gavers is a PhD student under the Future Food Beacon Scholarship Scheme. He is supervised by Professor Frederica Theodoulou and Dr Smita Kurup at Rothamsted. At the University of Nottingham, his affiliate university, he is supervised by Dr Darren Wells and Dr Jonathan Atkinson. Gavers' project is Understanding the Mechanism for Hypoxia Tolerance in Rice. In collaboration with the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), and under the supervision of Dr Shalabh Dixit, his project aims to use transcriptomics, proteomics and phenomics to study landraces with tolerance to hypoxia and contrast them with sensitive cultivars to elucidate the mechanism of hypoxia tolerance in rice.
Between 2017 and 2019, prior to starting his PhD, Gavers worked as a Research Assistant for the Wheat Grain Biochemistry and Genetics group at the School of Agriculture, Food and Wine, University of Adelaide, Australia, after finishing his master’s at the same university in December 2016.
